BASDA's Green Charter What is the Green Charter? The Green Charter is a major initiative focusing on "green IT" from BASDA, the voice of the UK software industry. Its launch is being supported by over 25,000 BASDA members, ranging from Sage to small specialist providers. Why should my business support the Green Charter? All signatories will be given the BASDA Green Charter logo and will provide environment advice on their Web sites and marketing collateral. These companies will be highlighted as having a firm green commitment and a dedication to driving carbon efficiency within their product development. Paul Stobart, CEO Sage UK & Ireland commented, "We fully support this initiative and believe there is a real part for software providers to play in order to benefit UK businesses, large and small. We know from our own research that environmental issues are important to our customers and there is clearly a real need for us all to be working to common standards and measurements so that our customers will see real meaning to carbon accounting." The Three Steps Of BASDA's Green CharterTo date, pressure on organisations to meet green targets has been extremely limited. However, the Green Charter is aiming to lead the UK towards a 20 per cent reduction in greenhouse emissions by 2020. Previously, many companies have professed their green credentials but never had a measure to compare these to. To counter this, the Green Charter is spelling out clear and concise deliverables that the developers will have to achieve to reach the required standard:
